We're very excited to announce that AO3 now hosts more than one million 中文-普通话 國語 (Mandarin Chinese) fanworks! Mandarin Chinese is the first non-English language to pass one million fanworks, and we appreciate everyone who's helped us reach this milestone.

AO3 hosts fanworks in a wide variety of languages: currently, the count is around 150! You can browse the Work Languages page to see more. We're grateful that so many creators from so many backgrounds have chosen to host their fanworks on AO3, and we appreciate each and every fanwork that's been shared.

Since many users are multilingual, we wanted to open the floor: which language(s) do you prefer to engage with in fandom? Do you read, listen to, watch, and/or create works in the same language? Is your answer the same for all the fandoms you're part of?

I also have an announcement to make:

Next year will be the tenth round of Fandom5K, if you can believe that! I've also decided it will be the last.

I've had a great time running this exchange, I've met some amazing people, and I've been delighted to see millions and millions of words posted to make other fans happy. However, ten years is a long time to do anything, and I'm ready to focus on personal projects. The exchange scene is much busier now than it was when CBMod and I kicked this off--hopefully participants can find plenty of other options throughout the year.

My plan is to retire the exchange rather than handing it over to a new mod, but of course anyone is welcome to start up an exchange on a similar theme. If you are interested in doing so and have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

To make the tenth and final year something we can all look forward to, two sub-announcements:

First, I plan to announce the 2026 schedule by 1 February, 2026.

Hopefully that way everyone who wants to join can plan ahead more easily, and hopefully I can keep myself from letting the schedule creep later and later every year, as it has a habit of doing.

Second, I am issuing an amnesty to anyone who defaulted late in 2025 or previous years, as long as that default occurred before the works due deadline.

That is, if you forgot to contact me during check-in week, or you checked in but then hit the default button before the deadline because something came up, you no longer need to create a make-up assignment to participate in the final round.

If you didn't default before the works due deadline--maybe you simply didn't show up on that date and never turned a work in, or you defaulted with an extension--I will still ask you to turn in a makeup assignment before signing up next year. This also may apply if you turned in a placeholder or your gift otherwise didn't fulfill our rules.

If you have any questions about how this amnesty applies to you, please let me know! I may take a little time to get back to you during the offseason, so I'd suggest asking early if you need to plan ahead.

Reading

• I DNF'd You Had Me at Happy Hour by Timothy Janovsky. I was gonna try to give it a little more time, but I made it one page before one of the characters called the prostate the "p-spot", and that was just too much for me apparently lol
• I read more of The Silver Branch by Rosemary Sutcliff. Almost finished!
• Ficwise, still on VegasPete. It's a very good, very horny time over there! I just finished reading long story short, it was always you by hawkshadow , which was a lot of angsty fun.

Watching

• The roommate and I finished We Are. Really loved it, I think it's in my top 3 Thai BL series now. So many good relationship dynamics, both romantic and platonic! Already loved PondPhuwin of course, but we're definitely going to be looking to watch more with some of the other actors.
• The roommate and I decided on a slightly more serious vibe for our next show, so we started The Heart Killers. Enjoying it so far! Except for how we are not really liking the main love interest, but I'm hoping that'll change soon.
• The best friend really wanted to watch a series with us again, but she hasn't been able to keep up with our pace lol So! We are watching KinnPorsche again, this time with the best friend on voice chat so we can all squee about it :D
• Been watching a lot of youtube this week as well. Specifically LittleBIGworld with Pond Phuwin, which is basically a little travel show with Pond and Phuwin, two of the roommate and I's favorite Thai actors. It's so cute! Also been watching some various other videos with Pond and Phuwin, as well as the other member's of Pond's band Jasp.er.
• AEW not quite as usual. The roommate and I were out of town Saturday, so we missed Collision and haven't caught up with all of it yet lol

Listening

• I saw a bit of TX2 on an instagram reel and was curious, so I listened to a bit of their music. It was ok.
• Listened to some of Chepang, which is a band I think frenzy mentioned recently. Also ok.
• I watched the (only?) two music videos from Jasp.er. Very fun :)

Writing

• Nothing. Did write up a couple of KinnPorsche fic ideas, but no actual writing.

AO3 Tag Wranglers continue to test processes for wrangling canonical additional tags (tags that appear in the auto-complete) which don't belong to any particular fandom (also known as "No Fandom" tags). This post will provide an overview of some of these upcoming changes.

Previous Tag Wrangling updates can generally be found on the @ao3org Tumblr and, for No Fandom tags, AO3 News. While No Fandom tag updates are generally announced on AO3 News as well as the @ao3org Tumblr, this may not be true of all wrangling updates. Some updates may remain solely distributed via Tumblr, especially those that only affect one or two fandoms. The way we distribute updates is subject to change as we work through new processes.

In this round of updates, we continued a method which streamlines creation of new canonical tags, prioritizing more straightforward updates which would have less discussion compared to renaming current canonical tags or creating new canonical tags which touch on more complex topics. This method also reviews new tags on a regular basis, so check back on AO3 News for periodic "No Fandom" tag announcements.

None of these updates change the tags users have added to works. If a user-created tag is considered to have the same meaning as a new canonical, it will be made a synonym of one of these newly created canonical tags, and works with that user-created tag will appear when the canonical tag is selected.

In short, these changes only affect which tags appear in AO3's auto-complete and filters. You can and should continue to tag your works however you prefer.

Lastly, as mentioned above, we are still working on connecting relevant user-created tags to these new canonicals. If you have questions about specific tags which should be connected to these new canonicals, please refrain from contacting Support about them until at least two months from now.

We have now closed signups! Below is the expected timeline for the next couple days:

• Like always, for the next 12 hours, people can contact us to add to their signups. This is intended for people who may have run into the character tagset bug when signing up close to the deadline, or whose nominations were approved late. However, anyone may ask to have characters/fandoms added to their requests or offers. If you would like us to add to your signup, please post on the screened mod contact post or email us at seasonsofdrabbles@gmail.com. Please make sure to include your AO3 username.

• After that window has closed, we will check the matching and send out emails to anyone who is unmatchable on offers. They will be given 24 hours to respond.

• Barring unexpected delays, assignments will go out before the end of Wednesday, August 13.
