We have one quick query about a nomination for "Don Armstrong" under Nancy Drew - Carolyn Keene. Could the nominator share more information about where this character appears in the canon? We're having a bit of trouble verifying they exist. Thank you!

Sign-ups are still ongoing and will remain open until Monday, August 11 @ 11:59pm Eastern Daylight time (Countdown). Once that deadline has passed, we will have a 12-hour grace period during which you can request changes to your signup.

July 2025 Newsletter, Volume 202

Banner of a paper airplane emerging from an envelope with the words 'OTW Newsletter: Organization for Transformative Works'

I. UPCOMING BOARD ELECTION

The 2025 OTW Board Election will be held on August 15-18, a week from today.

Elections, Communications, and Translation worked together to announce candidate and voting information. Voting instructions have been emailed to all eligible OTW members, and translated versions of voting instructions are available on the Elections website. Candidate answers to Q&A questions can also be found on the Elections website, and a live Candidate chat was held on August 2 via Discord.

II. ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN

Legal has been closely monitoring legal developments and proposals about internet age verification in the US, UK, and around the world and taking steps to ensure that the AO3 user experience will not change. They also responded to a number of user queries and dealt with a commercial company that has been using the AO3 trademark in a confusing way.

In early July, Accessibility, Design, & Technology resolved some issues and downtime related to creating bookmarks on AO3. They also deployed several releases of bug fixes and improvements, including a performance improvement for the page that administrators use to search for user accounts. Lastly, in conjunction with Systems having installed and set up new servers, they finalized some Elasticsearch upgrades. You can refer to the recent release notes for more details.

In June, Support received 3,348 tickets, while Policy & Abuse received 3,738 tickets. Their TOS Spotlight news post series has now concluded; if you missed it, we encourage you to look it over and contact Policy & Abuse if you have any further TOS questions.

Tag Wrangling continues to test processes for wrangling canonical tags in "No Fandom"—tags that aren't specific to any particular fandom—and announced some new canonical tags on July 14. More tags will continue to be canonized and announced on a regular basis.

In June, Tag Wrangling handled over 526,000 tags, or over 1,200 tags per volunteer! \o/

III. OPEN DOORS IMPORTS CONTINUE

Open Doors finished importing all fanfiction from the Harry Potter archive FictionAlley and is now processing fanart hosted on the site. You can find all imported works in the FictionAlley collection. Unclaimed works are currently restricted to logged-in AO3 users, but per Open Doors' agreement with the archivist, they will be unlocked 30 days after the import is fully completed.

All FictionAlley creators should have received one or more emails with links to claim, orphan, delete their works, or prevent the import of any additional works of theirs in the future. If you were a creator and did not receive this email, please contact Open Doors for assistance. You can also contact Open Doors if you would like to prevent future imports of your Harry Potter works specifically.

The import process for HarryPotterFanFiction.com and MuggleNet Fan Fiction are also underway. If your email address has changed since you were a member of either archive, or you would like Open Doors not to import your works, please contact Open Doors. Please refer to the import announcements for a full list of how Open Doors can assist you.

Elsewhere, Open Doors has continued their importing work on My Mongoose, an archive for The Sentinel.

IV. ELSEWHERE AT THE OTW

Communications' Con Outreach team wrapped up Capital City Comic Con in Lansing, Michigan, USA—thank you to everyone who tabled and who said hi to us! You can check out con attendees' fanwork recommendations in the convention's AO3 collection.

Fanlore's themed month for July, Fandom in Color, was a big success! They're now planning their next editing challenge, Stub September, which will be themed around animals with swords this year. Check out Fanlore's social media (Bluesky, Twitter/X, and Tumblr) for announcements about the challenge, which will run from September 8-21.

Transformative Works and Cultures is finalizing their upcoming general issue, volume 46, which will be published on September 15. Their upcoming Latin American Fandoms and Music Fandoms specific issues are still accepting submissions until January 1, 2026. Lastly, they collaborated with Communications on an OTW website page about the TWC committee, outlining the team behind the publication and spotlighting TWC's Fans of Color research prize.

V. GOVERNANCE

Board held the quarterly Board meeting on July 20 on Discord. There were 44 attendees, and minutes will be available soon on the OTW website.

Alongside preparing for the Board meeting, Board and the Board Assistants Team collaborated across the OTW and made progress on several goals, including the OTW Crisis Management Plan, OTW Procurement Policy, Cybersecurity Report, Paid Staff Transition, and researching nonprofit training resources.

Finance is wrapping up 2024 reconciliations and working with auditors for the 2024 audit.

Ships Crossing 2025

Thank you for writing and/or drawing for me! I’m also [archiveofourown.org profile] plutonianshores on AO3, and I have several previous letters on this journal if you want to look back at what I’ve requested in past exchanges. I’m requesting fic and art for all fandoms.

I’m totally fine with any levels of gore in gifts, and am also fine with character death (including of requested characters). Any ships for my requested solo characters, additional background ships, and combining my requested ships into poly ships are very welcome, as is adding pretty much any ship as a consensual established relationship to noncon porn. And feel free to include any of your favorite kinks! Barring my DNWs, I am into literally everything, my biggest turnon is reading fic or seeing art with the creator’s fave kinks included. I also have no preference for top/bottom or dom/sub choices in any ships if you’re writing/drawing porn (and don’t have a preference for maledom vs femdom in het ships). I often have one or a few specific ideas for these crossovers, but I am down for literally anything if my more specific prompts don't catch your fancy!

On Thursday, whoops...

Reading
  • I started reading You Had Me at Happy Hour by Timothy Janovsky. I'm like halfway through and not really enjoying it, so it's likely to be a DNF. There's just so much therapy speak and the characters are not interesting enough to make up for it.
  • I started reading The Silver Branch by Rosemary Sutcliff (The Dolphin Ring Cycle #2). Feeling kind of meh about it but I also haven't gotten very far. Just not feeling any books at the moment :/
  • I started reading The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. I've seen so much about it online and have been meaning to read it for ages. Trying to decide if I want to jump in with the tasks or wait until after my trip to Texas next week.
  • Ficwise, I'm going hard for VegasPete. Nothing much spectacular so far, but some good fics! Currently I'm reading I Want to Be the Place You Call Home (A VegasPete Omegaverse) by [archiveofourown.org profile] SurelyMeretricious , which is fun, but they've softened their relationship and Vegas in particular a lot, and I'm missing the fuckedupness lol
Watching
  • The roommate and I finished KinnPorsche! So wild! So good! Even more obsessed with Vegas now, as well as his actor, Bible. Definitely my favorite of the Thai BLs we've watched so far :D
  • The roommate wanted some lighter watching, so we watched Fish Upon the Sky, which has the same leads as Never Let Me Go. A very silly, kind of stupid show, but fun.
  • Since we were enjoying those lead actors so much, the roommate and I decided to just finish things off and watch their third show together, We Are. We're about halfway through and it's been very cute!
  • AEW as usual. I'm a bit bored with it at the moment tbh. Except for everything happening with Kyle Fletcher, love him.
Listening
  • I've listened to a couple fanmixes linked in fics I'm reading, nothing particularly interesting.
Writing
  • I wrote a couple of poems. Which doesn't sound like much, and isn't really, but that little bit has already put me over halfway to my wordcount from all of last month. July was rough...

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fancrafts/fanvids/fics/podfics/fanart/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

Deerington, Maine

March 2019 - June 2021
Deerington took place in the terminally isolated town of Deerington, Maine, a darling picture of small-town suburbia beset by frequent, gut-wrenching horrors. Mike was in the game for just over two years. He was pulled in from 2x09, "The Gate", as his ankle was caught by vines in the Upside Down, and spent the first couple of months as a feral child, trying to fend for himself. As castmates arrived and strangers became friends, he found a close-knit family and gradually built a life between the terrifying chaos. He left only briefly, gaining his canon memories through July 4, 1985, but gradually began to lose the desire to go home at all, preferring the person he'd grown into in Deerington. After two years and three months though, however, the world began to crumble, and Mike, now sixteen, took the last opportunity to leave, hoping against hope that he would return home with his memories intact.

He got part of his wish. His memories are intact, but he sure isn't home.

Here are the major highlights of this CRAU, in terms of changes to expect:

ɴᴀᴛᴜʀᴇ ᴠs. ɴᴜʀᴛᴜʀᴇ. In Hawkins, Mike spent his preteen years in relative comfort. Yes, there were monsters on occasion, but he was looked after by adults who fed him three healthy meals a day, took him to the doctor, made him to go school, and any number of other things important to a developing kid. The adults and older teens in Deerington tried their best, but there was only so much that could be done by a frazzled Steve Harrington managing several children in a ceaseless nightmare world. The product is a sickly-thin boy with untamable hair, razor-sharp bones, and a feral look about him. He's lost any semblance of manners or decorum, hasn't slept in a proper bed in years, and hasn't attended school since he was thirteen. Less apparent are the fierce struggles with anger and depression, built up after years of survival and loss. And he's y'all's problem, now.

ғᴇʟʟᴀs ɪs ɪᴛ ɢᴀʏ ᴛᴏ... Okay, you try getting introduced to the concept of bisexuality then immediately getting reunited with your best friend after several months of being nearly alone, and proceeding to spend the next two and a half years with him as your only continuous companion.

ɪɴᴊᴜʀʏ ᴄᴏᴜɴᴛ. Mike found all sorts of creative ways to get injured in Deerington, and a few have had lasting impacts. His nose is a bit crooked after he got hit in the face with a microwave and then failed to receive any medical care due to being stubborn and kind of embarrassed. He is missing his pinky and ring finger on his left hand, from where they were efficiently removed by a giant dog. Most noticeable and impactful is his right leg, which was crushed by a convenience store just a month or so before the end of Deerington. Treatment options weren't ideal at the time, and he was left with limited motion and chronic pain.

ᴜʜ ᴏʜ, sɪɴᴋʏ. Hard left turn, but it's just important to note that Mike drowned on the Titanic after it was attacked by Godzilla. It was deeply traumatic. He remains terrified of water and still has a whole AU in his head of growing up in the early 1900s.

ᴛʜᴇ ᴛɪᴅᴇ ᴘᴏᴅ ᴅᴇᴍᴏɴ. Mike got possessed by a dark entity that mostly just wanted to hiss at people from the ceiling and eat cleaning supplies. It turned out it just wanted friendship, and Will exorcised it with the power of love.

ɪᴍᴘᴏʀᴛᴀɴᴛ ʀᴇʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴsʜɪᴘs. Don't worry, I don't expect anyone to honor CRAU importance and won't force CR that you don't want. But here are the most key relationships that Mike had in the game, to where he would be impacted by seeing the characters in another game:
  • sᴛᴇᴠᴇ ʜᴀʀʀɪɴɢᴛᴏɴ: Steve was the first castmate to arrive in the game, and immediately made himself responsible for his ex's annoying little brother. He spent much of the next two years trying his best to take care of Mike, while Mike pretended that he hadn't gotten just as attached.
  • ᴡɪʟʟ ʙʏᴇʀs. Will arrived a few months after Mike, and they didn't leave each other's sight until they walked out of Deerington hand-in-hand. It wasn't hard for a deep friendship to turn into some frankly stunning codependency, and for a little crush to develop on the side. They decided to be boyfriends after a very helpful red-string-of-fate plot.
  • ᴡᴀᴅᴇ ᴡɪʟsᴏɴ. The first adult Mike felt like he could trust, who quickly became a weird uncle figure Mike could come to with questions about serious shit. He taught Mike about gay people and guns.
  • ᴘᴇᴛᴇʀ ᴘᴀʀᴋᴇʀ. Specifically the PS4 Pete, but he doesn't know there are others yet. He took up the role of weird uncle after Wade left, and made it his job to check on the kid against all resistance, eventually becoming another trusted caretaker. Peter died in the endgame and didn't come back, and Mike feels responsible.
  • ʙʀɪᴀɴɴᴀ ʙᴇʀᴇɴsᴏɴ. BFF, after Will. Partners in skateboarding, zombie-fighting, and weed-smoking. Mike failed to save her from dying two (2) times, and lost his fingers in the process.

Summer Round Signups Now Open!

[personal profile] littlefics
[community profile] seasonsofdrabbles
Signups are now open! They will remain open until Monday, August 11 @ 11:59pm Eastern Daylight time (Countdown). You can browse the requests in the app!

The tagset will remain open for nominations through the end of signups. Please disambiguate your nominations to make the approvals process faster.

IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: We have a new rule this round that participants cannot opt out of single drabbles. In other words, you are still welcome to request/offer other drabble types, but you cannot exclude single drabbles from your offers or requests. We will let you know via the email associated with your AO3 account if we notice you've left out single drabbles in your signup. Matching and signups will otherwise work the same as before.

Have questions? Expand the "Key Info on the Rule Change" section below for more info. If your question is still not answered, please get in touch via email or the Mod Contact Post.

Key Info on the Rule ChangeQ: Why make this rule change?
A: Since this is an event celebrating drabbles, we thought it made sense for a 100-word single drabble to be the minimum that participants can expect to write or receive. We received the suggestion from a participant and put it up to a community poll, where a strong majority were in favor of the rule change.

Q: How does this rule change affect how I sign up?
A: It affects the signup process itself very little. You can still select the fandoms, characters, and drabble types you are interested in writing or receiving. You are still free to request or offer longer drabble types. You can still check "Any". However, you can no longer exclude the "Drabble" tag from your signup.

Q: What happens if I don't include single drabbles in my signup?
A: We will reach out to you via the email associated with your AO3 account and offer two options: we can either edit the signup to add single drabbles, or remove your signup. Participants who don’t get back to us by the end of the grace period (12 hours after signups close) will have their signup removed.

Q: How will matching work?
A: Since everyone is requesting or offering single drabbles, you are effectively matchable with anyone requesting/offering the same fandom AND character. However, drabble types are still a matching criterion. In other words, people who want to write/request other drabble types would still be more likely to match with each other. For example, all things being equal, someone requesting Single Drabble and Triple Drabble is more likely (not guaranteed) to match with someone offering Single Drabble and Triple Drabble, than with someone only offering Single Drabble, or someone offering Single Drabble and Single Drabble Series/Sequence.

Q: Do I have to write single drabbles to participate?
A: If you have matched to someone who has only requested the "Drabble" freeform tag, then yes, you have to write a 100-word drabble for your assignment. If they have requested other drabble types, though, you are welcome to write any of them for your recipient.

Q: What if I don't like this rule change or it ends up sucking?
A: We tried implementing the rule change in a way that caused the least disruption on the participant side of things, but we will be soliciting feedback at the end of the round. If you have opinions or ideas you'd like to share at that time, we would love to hear them. This is admittedly a test run.

GENERAL SIGNUPS REMINDERS:

Please disregard the Optional Tags field! It will not be used in this exchange.

Is AO3 not letting you sign up for a character that you know is definitely in the tagset?
  • If it is simply not appearing in the dropdown, try copy-pasting it from the tagset itself. This is a known AO3 bug.
  • If that does not work, please comment here or email us with the exact fandom and character(s) you were trying to request/offer. A mod will then batch load it for you on the backend, and you will be able to request it. This is a caching issue with AO3.

Requests:

  • You must request 3-10 fandoms with 1-20 characters and 1-7 drabble types each. Fandoms in your requests must be unique, but may be related (e.g., three Star Wars requests would be fine, as long as it was three separate Star Wars fandoms).

  • If you wish, you may request Any for drabble type. This means you are open to receiving any of the 7 drabble types in the tagset. Additionally, please note that as of this round, you cannot opt out of single drabbles. In other words, you are still welcome to request other drabble types, but you cannot exclude single drabbles from your requests.

  • If you wish, you may request Any character. This means any character in the canon (NOT just the tagset). Please do not request Any unless you really are open to receiving any character from that canon.

  • If you have character DNWs, requesting Any might not be the best idea, as this could end up with a bad match with someone who had only offered that character. We will be checking for this before we send assignments, but it's possible we could miss something, which would lead to us having to re-assign your writer and send you to pinch hit. (Note that the character DNW would still be upheld in this situation.) If you are requesting Any and do not wish to receive fic about objects, etc., you should DNW that as well.

  • Blank signups are allowed, but prompts, likes, and a list of DNWs are strongly encouraged.

Offers:
  • You must offer 3-10 fandoms with 1-20 characters and 1-7 drabble types each. Fandoms in your offers must be unique, but may be related (e.g., three Star Wars offers would be fine, as long as it was three separate Star Wars fandoms).

  • If you wish, you may offer Any for drabble type. This means you are open to writing any of the 7 drabble types in the tagset. (Note that unless your recipient has also requested Any, you must write one of the specific drabble types they requested.) Additionally, as of this round, you cannot opt out of single drabbles. In other words, you are still welcome to offer other drabble types, but you cannot exclude single drabbles from your offers.

  • If you wish, you may offer Any character. This means any character in the tagset (i.e., if your recipient has requested specific characters, you must write one of them). Please do not offer Any unless you really are open to writing any character in the tagset for that fandom (including any last-minute additions to the tagset).

Do Not Wants:
  • Only reasonable DNWs in your AO3 signup will be enforced.

  • A reasonable DNW is a DNW that is clear and does not attempt to box your writer into writing just one thing.

Other:

  • If you encounter any issues while signing up that are not noted above, please let us know ASAP, as AO3 bugs can sometimes hit exchanges.

  • If you need to let us know something about your signup (such as not wanting to be assigned to a specific other participant), please contact us via email (seasonsofdrabbles AT gmail) or the mod contact post.

Multiple recs posts of mostly small fandoms

A few years I created a database to organize my fanfics, stocked it with about 1800 fics from a handful of fandoms (mostly small ones), and then got swamped with things and put it on hold. Tonight I've finally caught up with the fandoms in it* and updated all of the lists, and thought it might be good to link them here in case someone hasn't seen the posts before or wants to revisit them now that I have added nearly 350 fics to the lists.

You can find them all linked at my master recs post. All lists indicate which ships are major in the fic, if any, and I mark a few additional things that may be helpful.

Fandoms currently included:
  • Alphas

  • FBI (CBS show)

  • FBI: Most Wanted

  • Fried Green Tomatoes (book & movie)

  • Push

  • Speed

  • The Matrix

as well as a smattering of recs from tinier fandoms (mainly movies). Fandoms with fewer than 30 fics in my database (such as Speed) are in a "Tiny fandoms" post, and there's a post just for crossovers as well.

In order to keep maintenance to a minimum, I don't include all the themes with the main posts above, but I generally include them with any post made on request. Themes tagged cover everything from tropes to grammar (I tag anything that isn't third person past tense) to story ending (positive, sad/unhappy, etc.) to AO3's archive warnings. If you want or need to be spoiled about everything, follow the directions on that post to request a custom recs list and I'd be happy to make one for you.

* The only fandoms not updated are the two FBI shows, because I haven't watched past S3 of the main show and S2 of the Most Wanted one. Someday, perhaps…
